Cops fatally shot a man in Hunts Point after the suspect opened fire on them, investigators say.
It all happened at around 2:33 a.m. on August 1. Police in a marked patrol car on Southern Boulevard, near Avenue of St. John, were flagged down by a witness who said there was a man with a gun. A 911 call also reported shots fired in the same area.
In the vicinity of 580 Southern Blvd, the officers observed a man fitting the description of the gunman. As the officers exited the vehicle the man continued to walk away and ignore police. The officers ordered the suspect to drop the gun. Police say the man turned and fired several shots in the officers’ direction. The officers returned fire and hit the suspect one time in the chest.
Responding EMS rushed the wounded suspect to Lincoln Hospital where he was pronounced DOA. Cops say they recovered a 32-caliber semi-automatic handgun at the scene. The officers involved in the shooting were treated for trauma at Jacobi Hospital.
